3rd Estuaries Unmasked Night Seminar 26th March
Hi everyone,
I hope all is well. I’m just sending through an email to say hello and remind you all about the EstuaryWatch Unmasked night Seminar on the 26th of March and EstuaryWatch Social Events that will be held next Sunday at Spring Creek and the following Sunday at Kennett River. Here are the details;
The “Estuaries Unmasked” night seminar has now been organized.
It will be held on the March 26th from 6:30-8:30pm at the Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club, which is located on Surf Beach Road in Ocean Grove.
Supper and refreshments will be provided.
RSVP is essential, and is required by Friday 20th of March.
Format for the evening involves a speaker commencing at 6:30pm until 7:10pm, then a short break for supper. The remaining speakers will begin at 7:30pm. Questions are encouraged as question time will be allocated toward each speaker.
Please contact me for inquires and bookings.
The guest speakers for the event include:
Jeremy Hindell
Topic: The affects of estuary processes and functions on Black Bream movements.
Dr Jeremy S. Hindell is the Senior Estuarine Ecologist for the Arthur Rylah Institute. Jeremy has undertaken a number estuarine fish movement studies throughout Victoria, and is currently working on a large estuarine fish movement study in the Gippsland lakes, which began in 2003. Jeremy will provide an insight into the affects of estuary processes and functions (i.e. freshwater inflow, physical and chemical properties, the presence and absence of riparian vegetation and aquatic habitat) on fish movements within these environments.
Ash Herrod
Topic: Resident and migratory shorebird species found in our local estuarine environments.
Ash Herrod from Birds Australia is working on developing an optimal method for monitoring shorebird populations on the Bellarine Peninsula and western shoreline of Port Phillip Bay. From his field work involving repeated shorebird surveys and mapping of shorebird foraging and roosting sites, he has gained much knowledge of the shorebirds found within the region, and the habitats they utilise.
Glen Ehmke
Topic: Corangamite estuaries: one of the most important habitats for one of the world’s rarest birds.
Glen is also from Birds Australia. He has an extensive knowledge on one of Australia’s rarest bird species, the Orange Bellied Parrot (OBP). With fewer than 150 remaining in the wild this species depend on estuaries and associated vegetation for their survival and estuaries in Corangamite are traditional stronghold for the birds. However numbers have fallen dramatically in this region over the last 10 years. Learn how the Orange-bellied Parrot recovery team is finding out why and what they are doing to help these birds and estuaries in the region.
I have re-attached the flier displaying all of the above details to this email, just in case it has been misplaced since I last sent it.
